“Healthy families begin with healthy men.” This powerful message formed the heart of an insightful discussion when Health & Wellness Practitioner, Thabiso Ngcobo, represented Incema NPO on Radio Khwezi’s Sakha Isizwe programme on 15 June 2026.

Hosted by Lindani Zaca, Sakha Isizwe is a respected community platform dedicated to showcasing the work of non-profit organisations and highlighting initiatives that positively transform lives across KwaZulu-Natal.

Representing Incema NPO, Ngcobo joined the programme to explore the critical role men play in strengthening families, protecting children, and creating safer communities. Throughout the interview, he challenged traditional perceptions of masculinity while encouraging men to embrace a healthier, more compassionate understanding of what it truly means to lead.

Speaking on the realities faced by many men today, Ngcobo acknowledged that society often measures masculinity by one’s ability to provide financially or display toughness. However, he explained that true strength is also demonstrated through emotional honesty, humility, and the willingness to seek help when needed.

“Strength is not only about providing for others. It is also about having the courage to acknowledge your struggles and ask for support when you need it.”

The conversation naturally shifted towards one of South Africa’s most pressing social challenges—Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Ngcobo stressed that ending violence against women and children cannot be achieved by women alone, but requires the active involvement and commitment of men and boys.

He emphasized that meaningful change begins at home, where fathers, uncles, brothers, coaches, teachers, and community leaders have the opportunity to model respect, accountability, and healthy relationships.

During the interview, Ngcobo outlined practical ways in which men can become agents of positive change by:

• Mentoring and guiding young boys to become responsible, respectful men.
• Teaching children the importance of consent, accountability, and healthy personal boundaries.
• Challenging harmful attitudes, stereotypes, and behaviours that contribute to violence.
• Promoting dignity, equality, and mutual respect for women and girls.
• Demonstrating healthy relationships through everyday actions and positive leadership.

Rather than focusing solely on the consequences of violence, the discussion highlighted the importance of prevention through education, mentorship, and open communication within families and communities.

As the interview drew to a close, Ngcobo left listeners with a message of hope and responsibility. He encouraged fathers and male caregivers to intentionally create opportunities to speak with their sons about respect, responsibility, emotional wellbeing, and the value of treating others with dignity.

“Every man matters,” he said. “Healthy men build healthy homes, healthy families, and ultimately healthier communities.”

He further reminded listeners that seeking emotional support should never be viewed as weakness but as an act of courage and personal growth.
